In Conversation with Thomas Gough

Thomas Gough may be an unknown name to you, however, his life story is worthy of delving into. As a young student visiting Lesotho as a volunteer teacher, he developed a love for the stars with a night sky that extended as far as the eye could see. Following University, he was given the opportunity to continue this serious interest with an invitation to be part of a small team to find a new site for an observatory in the Northern Hemisphere. He was instrumental in identifying what is now a major observatory site on the island of La Palma (near Tenerife). Subsequent to this, and after a short time as a full-time teacher, he was able to buy a strong 40-foot sailing yacht.
The initial plan was to cross the Atlantic, but it became a circumnavigation. A journey that was forged through a strong affinity with the outdoors, the stars and judgement of when to keep going and when to hold back. Sitting with Thomas for a couple of hours will not only entertain but give you a new respect for where a quiet determination can lead if you provide the space for it to grow.
