Whats in store for 2014

Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival

2014 is, if there wasn’t reason enough before, the year to come and visit Scotland and experience not only the Ryder Cup, based at Gleneagles, and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow but also a “year-long programme of events and activities to showcase all that’s great about Scotland; mouth-watering food & drink events, lots to get you active in our great outdoors plus spectacular arts, cultural and ancestral heritage to explore”[1]. Prominently is the month of May which has been designated as the Whisky Month and which is being launched at the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, beginning on the 1st of May and ending on the 5th.

The Festival invites people to the area of Speyside each year and focuses on educating visitors and locals alike about whisky with several different, though equally fun and informative, events happening in the area. Here at the Dowans, we are hosting a few events that not only allow an opportunity to learn more about the whiskies that are made in the area but also to emphasise the versatility of using whisky as a perfect match to the fantastic Scottish produce that we have available to us. See below for a description of each of the events:

  • Friday the 2nd and Sunday the 4th of May: Whisky Themed Dinner. We are hosting a five course meal with each course being matched to a Speyside whisky. The emphasis will not only be on the wealth of produce that we have available to us, not only in the rest of Scotland but specifically in this area itself, and the subtle characteristics that are present within Speyside whiskies which will enhance your tasting experience. Dinner will begin service at 7pm so please join us ahead of time in order to relax into the evening. Tickets are priced at £75 per person which includes the five drams and your tea/coffee and petit fours. Please call us on 01340 871488 to get more information and to reserve your table.
  • Saturday the 3rd and Sunday the 4th: Whisky Tasting with Andy Bell. ‘Come and join Islay boy Andy Bell of Inverarity121 and whisky consultant of Mulberrybank Auction House as he talks you through a tasting of Speyside finest while discussing their history and the collectable whisky market. Expect some fantastic drams and your chance to get some great tips on some future investments’. The tasting starts at 2.30pm. Tickets are priced at £20 per person. For more information or to make a booking then please call us on 01340 871488. Only 30 tickets available so book quickly!
  • Monday the 5th of May: Venison and Whisky. We are lucky enough to benefit from a relationship with Ballindalloch Estate, renowned for the quality of its produce, where we buy our fantastically tender Red Deer. Equally benefitting from the estate is Glenfarclas whisky that sources its spring water directly from it. In order to emphasise the reliance upon and deference to the many different strengths of this area, we will be hosting a dinner that matches a Red Deer Venison dish with a Glenfarclas dram. Tickets are priced at £18.95 per person and bookings will be taken from 6.00pm with last orders at 8.30pm. Call us on 01340 871488 to find out more and to reserve tickets.
