Princess Margaret Nursery: More Discoveries

20 months into our time here at the Dowans and we have made significant progress with our hopes of restoring life back to what is a beautifully situated and breathtaking building. Our reception area was finally completed in the middle of August, along with our toilet suite (including a fully disabled access and baby changing facility) and we are now finally in the throes of transforming the lounge, unfortunately a largely unused room which has existed predominantly as ‘dead space’, into our new ‘M’ Bar.

As those who have been following our progress will know, whether from afar or from joining us at several points during our time here, we are incredibly passionate about the historical significance of this building in terms of its position as St Margaret Nursery and the impact that it had on the lives of those who grew up here and worked here. So you can imagine our excitement when the removal of some of the wallpaper in this room revealed the same type of hand crafted paintings that had been revealed when we had removed the wallpaper in what is now ’57’, one of our restaurants. In comparison however to the paintings we found in ’57’, these are far more intact and reveal much more about the significance of the room at the time of the nursery (which turns out to have been one of the central playrooms). Although we remain relatively uncertain about the meaning of the paintings, all that have seen them have created their own theories. One such theory is that each of these paintings represented a ‘house’ for the children to be a part of; another that it provided a means by which to show the children the various cultures that existed at that time. Unfortunately, we have not been able to get any concrete answers as of yet although we are determined to find out as much information as we can. In the meantime, please feel free to have a look and maybe you will create your own theories! Additionally, if anybody does know anything i.e. who might have painted them, then please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.
